Equality Analysis

Diverse mix of students

What is Equality Analysis?

One of our key strategic aims is internationalisation and inclusion. If we are to meet this aim we must understand the needs of our staff, students, stakeholders and the wider community and address those needs in everything we do.

Equality Analysis (EA) is the systematic analysis of the potential or actual effects of all current and proposed activities, carried out by the University. We must do this in order to comply with the duties of the Public Sector Equality Duties within the Equality Act.  We need to show we have taken "due regard" to ensuring we are not discriminating by applying criteria which could have a less favourable impact on some groups of people compared with others. We also need to make sure that, where possible, we are making a positive contribution to inclusion. In other words it is an equality MOT or risk assessment.

What outcomes do we want to achieve?

We want to make sure that equality, diversity and inclusion is embedded into all aspects of the University's activities by ensuring that :

  • New or refurbished buildings are fully accessible to meet the needs of our disabled staff, students and visitors; going beyond the minimum requirements of Part M of the Building Regulations
  • Our educational provision is inclusive and gives all students the opportunity to achieve their full potential
  • The service provision to our students is equally accessible to all and does not exclude any protected group or groups.
  • Our culture is fully inclusive and supports all our employees so they can achieve their full potential.
  • Our strategic plans, policies, procedures and processes, whether formal or informal, do not exclude or disadvantage any protected group or groups of people.
  • Our business activities are designed to meet with all aspects of Equality Legislation
