Society, Religion and Belief Research Group

Vision:

Religion and belief in society have become subjects of serious concern not only to academics but also to national and international governments, policy makers, local communities, social groups and individuals.

On a public and private level religion, values and beliefs are apparently of more social and personal significance now than at any other time in modern history.

Communities, and inter-community conflict, often appear organised around codes deeply rooted in cultural and religious traditions. In such a context it is essential that information and opinion about the role of religion and belief in society is rooted in a critical research base.

Themes of the Group's research will include:

  • sacred texts in culture and society - investigating how texts of world faiths as well as legends, myths, and science fiction and fantasy narratives, are appropriated by readers in their spiritual lives
  • religion and violence - including an analysis of 'honour' cultures, sectarianism and anti-Semitism; and the role of religion and belief in forming, sustaining and undermining communities
  • gender, sexuality and religion - the role and treatment of women in religious movements; and how gay, lesbian and bi-sexual communities and institutionalised religions interact
  • the use of religious traditions and values, as well as alternative therapies and philosophies, in dealing with 'fateful moments' such as pregnancy, birth, illness, death, disaster and trauma
  • mass media representation of religion and belief in cultural forms (state-or church-operated, or independent), including films and music.
