Placement learning
Whilst on placement, you'll spend your time at either of the following three University Hospitals:
University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL)
If you are allocated to the Leicester rotation you'll rotate between the three large teaching hospitals in Leicester - Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI), Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield Hospital.
This rotation will give you the opportunity to experience working in a very busy trauma centre, as well as valuable time working with paediatric patients (LRI). You'll also work in a major cardiac centre (Glenfield) and a national renal and urology centre at the General. In addition, you'll also spend some time at Loughborough Hospital, gaining experience of working in a community hospital setting.
UHL is a progressive forward thinking Trust, and you'll meet numerous radiographers undertaking extended roles such as imaging reporting, performing barium enemas (to look at the bowel). The Trust has fully embraced the 4 Tier model for Radiography, so you'll also work with Assistant Practitioners, Advanced Practitioners and Consultant Radiographers.
Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust
If you're allocated the Nottingham rotation you'll rotate between the two large teaching hospitals in Nottingham - Queens Medical Centre (QMC) and Nottingham City Hospital. This rotation will provide you with experience of working in a major emergency centre at the QMC, gaining invaluable skills in trauma and theatre radiography. You'll gain experience of working in a regional centre for oncology, cardiothoracic surgery and renal transplantation at Nottingham City. In addition you'll also spend some time at Ilkeston Hospital, gaining experience of working in a community hospital setting.
The QMC also houses a brand new Diagnostic Treatment Centre, which opened in 2008, and houses state of the art radiographic equipment, including digital radiography systems. As part of your rotation you'll spend time working in this purpose built facility.
Derby City Hospitals NHS Trust
If you're allocated the Derby Hospitals rotation you'll rotate between the Derbyshire Royal Informary (DRI), Derby City General Hospital (DCGH) and Queens Hospital in Burton on Trent. The DRI will provide you with experience in trauma and orthopaedics, including working with the internationally renown Pulvertaft Hand Unit. Time at the DCGH will provide you with the opportunity to practice your general radiography, as well as working with paediatrics in the Children's Hospital. In addition you'll also spend some time at Queens Hospital, gaining experience working in a smaller hospital setting.
By the end of 2009 the majority of services from the DRI site will have relocated to a brand new super hospital currently being built on the DCGH site. This will be the largest hospital in the East Midlands, and house state of the art imaging facillities.
