Sarah Cross, current student

Sarah is currently studying BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy and talks about her experiences on the course so far.

Why occupational therapy?

I chose to do occupational therapy because I have always wanted to work in a health care profession. After finding more about it through work experiences such as shadowing OT's at London hospitals I knew it was the job for me! It is so diverse in what it has to offer job wise, that it gives you so many opportunities in different fields and where you can work, such as abroad.

What have you enjoyed about the course?

The best part of the degree has to be placement as you are putting theory into practice and gaining so much experience. I have really enjoyed the course at Derby so far. It takes into account all different learning styles and therefore assessments are delivered in a number of forms such as; exams, assignments and presentations. I have also met a variety of people on the course from people, who like me, have recently left sixth form, to people who have had a lot of different experiences and journeys to get where they are. This is very beneficial to the course because having a variety of ages in the cohort enables you to learn so much more and you become friends with so many different people.

What is the support like?

There is a great deal of support from the tutors. Even though you're assigned your own personal tutor, if you have any problems or queries there are so many lecturers you can approach. They're all extremely knowledgable and easy to talk to which puts you at ease throughout.

What do you plan to do in the future?

When I qualify I'd like to get a few years experience in all different settings to gain experience. I'd then like to possibly go abroad and see what OT has to offer in a different country.
