Nursing at Chesterfield
The University of Derby nurse training in Chesterfield
Student nurse in Chesterfield
Our clinical skills facility
We’ve invested around £400,000 in teaching rooms, skills facilities, IT facilities and staff accommodation. Currently we have around 150 students based at the centre providing a fantastic learning environment. We'll grow the number of students until we reach full capacity of 300 enjoying the benefits of nursing training with us.
History
Following an NHS review in 2005 we were commissioned to train nurses in Chesterfield. We were particularly asked to encourage people from the local community to join us so they would stay in Chesterfield when they graduated.
Initially facilities were kindly provided at the Chesterfield Royal Hospital. But we quickly outgrew the space. After an exhaustive search for premises we found the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce Wharf Lane site most suited our needs.
Staff and students moved into their new premises in May 2007.
The Future
The site provides us with exciting opportunities to build on working relationships with Chesterfield Royal Infirmary, Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust and Chesterfield College. We're already bringing other activities to the centre like away days and planning groups. The new clinical skills room with its specialist equipment provides opportunities for joint working with local NHS and social services.
Thanks
To everyone involved in securing the new facilities. Colleagues within the local NHS Trusts for their support – particularly to the Chesterfield Royal Hospital team for providing us with our initial base and for supporting the development and transfer.
The Learning and Information Support team at the University have provided excellent IT and Learning facilities. Staff at the Chamber have been very helpful and supportive.
Finally all the University’s staff and students involved in planning and effecting the move to the new site and for maintaining the quality and delivery of the programme.
