Danielle Hibbert - Joint Honours Dance and Movement Studies

Danielle Hibbert

"During my time at the University of Derby, it truly has been a home away from home. As part of the Joint Honours programme, there is always a fear that there will be a lack of understanding as you are missing out on half a course, essentially. However, at this university, this is not the case. The lecturers and tutors fully support your mission to complete your course, to the best of your ability.

Coming from a predominantly urban dance background which involved no academia, I thought it would be a hard task in order to produce material that I, my peers and lecturers were satisfied with. However, at the University of Derby, you are shown how to break down the mechanics of dance into its purest form; movement. Additionally, how this movement can be interpreted and have a deeper meaning. I found this astonishing.

I love my course as it accepts people from all different backgrounds and by stripping back the layers to the basics, leaves everyone on the same page which makes it easier to produce materials with others. Within one dance studio, you will have the trained and non-trained produce material and pushing boundaries to make wonderful works of art. Instead of talking, I allow my body to produce my story.

The course has influenced me through every aspect of life, including my other course psychology. I am constantly looking for a deeper meaning and it's helping me to grow and mature into the person I am today."
