About this module
This module is aimed at increasing your understanding of the general principles of health promotion and how they may be applied to promoting bone health. You will need to have completed the Theoretical Considerations in the Diagnosis & Management of Osteoporosis module prior to studying this module.
Many factors throughout life affect bone health and the current emphasis on health promotion could be extended to include this very important topic. There are many documents which recognise the possibilities for reducing the risk of osteoporosis by lifestyle changes and outline the need for health promotion for all age groups, both to reduce the risk of low bone density and the risk of fracture.
The aim of this module is to introduce you to basic concepts of health promotion and the methodologies used. It will enable you to identify how health promotion activities related to the health of bones may efficiently and effectively be incorporated into practice.
You will study the basic concepts and methodologies of health promotion and how they may be applied to your clinical setting. This will include:
- A rationale for improving bone health and reducing the risk of osteoporosis by lifestyle modifications with reference to epidemiological data. Keeping bones healthy will be reviewed as a whole life issue and, therefore, relevant to all age groups. Consideration will be given to the requirements of particular patient groups and individuals.
- An overview of basic concepts and methodologies within health promotion will be included, as will barriers to effective health promotion. The role of health promotion and its practical application, will be discussed.
- You will be encouraged to identify health promotion activities as integral to your work, rather than as an adjunct to it and to critically evaluate current theory and practice. Key issues, including effective communication, facilitating informed decisions and motivation and ethical considerations arising in this context, will be included.
