Simple security measures you can take.
Top tips to improve security in your flat.
- Register any items with a serial number on the UK property register at www.immobilise.com.
- Put a postcode on all your valuables with a security pen.
- Don't leave notes on the door saying I'm out, back in half an hour etc. They're an open invitation to thieves.
- Keep your valuables out of sight and locked away wherever possible.
- Take your valuables home during the holidays.
- If you're all going to be out, especially at night, remember to leave a light on - it can prevent burglars.
- Only leave your ground floor windows open when you are in the room.
- Shut the window whenever you leave your bedroom, even if it is only to go to the bathroom or kitchen.
- Always lock your bedroom door when going out.
- Never wedge flat or main doors open. They are self locking and there to protect you. If you wedge them open, you put the whole flat at risk from theft or assault.
- Only let people you know into your flat using the intercom. If someone wants a flatmate, you should get the flatmate to speak to the person at the door, because it is up to them, if they want to let people in.
- Inform staff as soon as possible if something goes missing. If you call the police, ask for an incident number, especially if you need to make an insurance claim. Police contact numbers can be found in your Welcome Pack.
