Getting along with your flatmates

Students relaxing in the sun

Take time to get to know your flatmates

Keep an open mind

Respect other people, their views and habits - it will make your time in halls more interesting and enjoyable.

You may find that your flatmates are from different parts of the country or world, or have a different religion to you, so what seems normal to you may not be to them.

Talk to your flatmates about their backgrounds and explain yours to them. This will help you to understand each other's behavior, and prevent any misunderstandings or arguments

Arguments sometimes arise over seemingly small things like housework or noise.

They can usually be sorted out quite easily but if they seem to be getting out of hand, here are a few tips:

  • talk to your flatmates - they may not even realise you're upset
  • work out what the problem is - you may find you're arguing about different things
  • try not to lose your temper
  • be open to compromise arrange a meal for the whole flat so you can get to know each other better

If you can't resolve the problem then talk to your Hall Manager who will be happy to help you.
