Walking is one of the simplest and safest aerobic exercises you can do. It will help you strengthen your bones, control your weight, and condition your heart and lungs.
Some facts about walking
- On average, every minute of walking can extend your life by 1.5 to 2 minutes. That's about a two for one trade off!
- Walking an extra 20 minutes each day will burn off 7 pounds of body fat per year.
- To burn off one M&M, you need to walk the full length of a football field. Think about that next time you dip your hand into a candy bowl at someone's office!
- Longer, moderately-paced daily walks (40 minutes at 60% to 65% maximum heart rate) are best for losing weight.
- Shorter, faster walks (20-25 minutes at 75% to 85% maximum heart rate) are best for conditioning your heart and lungs.
- Cycling is good for the heart, and cheap - yet cycle use only accounts for less than 2% of journeys in the UK.

- Cycling burns 600 calories an hour.
- On a bicycle you can travel three times faster than you can walk, for the same amount of energy.
- On a bicycle you can travel up to 1,037 kilometres on the energy equivalent of a single litre of petrol.
- 20 bicycles can be parked in the same space taken up by one car.
- Cycling is great exercise: leisurely cycling (around 12 mph) burns calories at the same rate as very brisk walking (faster than 4mph).

Finally, if walking and cycling are out of the question the next best thing is public transport
The Unibus service in Derby runs every 10 minutes and does a circular route from the railway station in town via all the halls of residence and up to the main site at Kedleston Road. Other bus services run regularly in and around Derby and Buxton.
