Moving out campaign 2012
This summer Derby halls got together with three new charities to encourage students to recycle unwanted items in an easy and environmentally friendly way.
The initiative, known as the Moving out campaign had a fantastic response. One hundred and sixty six bags of unwanted items were donated to the British Heart Foundation, generating a total of £1361.20 for the heart charity's network of over 700 shops.
Local charity Treetops Hospice also benefitted from thirteen big sacks of donations for their shops in the region and Save the Children received twenty five sacks for their store in Derby. In addition, staff from all the halls in Derby gathered all unused food items left in halls and donated 14 boxes of food to the Padley Centre in Derby.
Cliff Seddon, a Hall Manager at Student Living said:
"Once again a big thank you to all our residents who made the Moving Out Campaign a success."
British Heart Foundation Stock Generator, Catherine Argyle, said:
"The response from the University of Derby students has been fantastic. Each British Heart Foundation shop needs to receive 400 bags of unwanted items a week to continue our life saving work. This scheme has been a huge help to our Derby shop and I'd like to encourage students to continue supporting the British Heart Foundation in the future."
Moving Out Campaign 2011
Last year for the first time we asked Derby residents to collect their unwanted items for charity before they moved out. The response was amazing. We collected 114 bags for Oxfam, 64 bags for the British Red Cross and 64 bags for the PDSA. In addition after students moved out staff collected and donated 193 undamaged store cupboard items to Age Concern UK.
Lynn Richards, Environmental Manager at Derby University said "Congratulations to everyone. This is fantastic."
Thanks to all those students and staff who helped to make it such a success.
