Earth Day

Student Living's carbon policy aims to reduce the carbon footprint in halls through encouraging you (and us) to be more energy efficient.

Here are some easy ways to save energy in halls

  • Try not to waste food by only cooking what you need or revamping leftovers. Remember wasted food is wasted energy.
  • Share - Sharing the cooking saves money, time and energy and makes for a friendly atmosphere in the flat.
  • Switch off - Switch off lights and appliances when you leave the room for more than 15 minutes and use natural light whenever you can.
  • Use your kettle efficiently - only boil the water you need and use it before it cools.
  • Turn off your computer and the power strip it's plugged in to, when you've finished using it. Activate the 'sleep' feature on your computer when you want to take a short break.
  • Use a lid on your saucepans to keep the heat in. Better still ever thought of getting a steamer - it saves energy and keeps all the nutrients in your vegetables instead of boiling them away.
  • Use a hob ring that's the right size for your pan. If it's larger you're simply heating up the air and wasting energy.
  • Close your windows in winter time.
  • Save paper - Print on both sides of paper, if possible. Use old envelopes and printer paper as scrap paper to make notes on. Only print if you really have to.
