Footprint takes first steps to a greener future

Student Living's Footprint campaign to reduce carbon emissions in halls was launched to students on 19 October at Nunnery Court in Derby. The launch saw students, staff and local partners including Friends of the Earth and Friends of Markeaton Brook come together to increase awareness and get support for the ongoing green initiatives taking place in halls.

Teresa Walter from Student Living said "Derby halls of residence have set themselves the task of reducing their carbon footprint by 40% by 2020 and our energy consumption by 15% by 2015, and through the Footprint campaign we are encouraging students to help us do this".

Second year BSc (Hons) Geology student Luke Gordon, 20, a resident of Nunnery Court hall of residence said "I already recycle and I encourage my flatmates to turn off lights and electricity, but this campaign has highlighted the issue again and I'm sure it will make more people aware of how easy it is to do their bit".

Monthly eco tips

May 2012 - Top three eco tips:

  • Mug-to-go: Carry a  mug with you when you go for take out beverages. You can even buy great re-usuable coffee cups from Amazon, Debenhams and plenty of other online retailers.
  • Use re-usable take-away containers to store leftovers or your lunch instead of using clingfilm or foil.
  • Keep your fridge fresh: To remove bad smells from your fridge cut a lemon in half and leave it inside or put some bicrabonate of soda in a bowl and leave it in the fridge to absorbe the smells.
