Membership of the Council

What is the Governing Council?

  • The University of Derby was incorporated as a Private Company, Limited by Guarantee on 7 July 1995.
  • The University is also a charity which is exempt from registration with the Charity Commission.
  • The Governing Council is the Board of Directors of the Company, thus every member of the Governing Council is a Director of the Company.
  • The Governing Council has responsibility for the governance of the institution and the members of the Executive are accountable to the Governing Council.

The Governing Council comprises 17 members.

The majority of these members (11) are independent governors including one who is nominated by the Church of England.

The Vice-Chancellor and three staff are appointed to the Governing Council together with two sabbatical officers of the University of Derby Students' Union.

In addition there are two governors who are local authority councillors.

The independent governors are key to the operation of the Governing Council.

The Chairman of Governing Council is designated Pro Chancellor. All four committees of the Council are mainly composed of independent governors.
