Why choose this course?
- Our course will give you the creative, technical and theoretical skills you need to work in the moving image sectors, as well as on your own self-initiated projects.
About the course
This practical course will give you the opportunity to explore the potential of moving images using both film and digital video. It will encourage you to be original and highly creative enabling you to explore your personal agenda, use your imagination, be experimental, take risks, think and act professionally, and encourages your desire to communicate with an audience.
We'll encourage you to anticipate and adapt to change, analyse, evaluate and reflect on information and experiences, and make independent judgments. You'll explore the exciting and challenging areas of film and video practice, and be able to fully engage with new digital technologies.
You will build up the knowledge and practical skills that are essential in a wide variety of careers, from moving image artists to documentary and narrative filmmakers. And we'll encourage you to develop a sound theoretical perspective on both your own work and the work of other mainstream, independent and avant-garde filmmakers.
This course is one of only a handful in the UK that offers you the opportunity to work with celluloid film as a medium. You'll learn about the equipment and software that is currently being used in the moving image sectors, so you'll be ready to start work in the industry when you graduate.
You can take an optional industrial placement for one year between stages two and three. During your placement you can study an additional qualification, the Diploma in Professional Practice, which consists of two modules - Contemporary Issues in Professional Practice and Applied Professional Practice.
If you don't have the appropriate qualifications to start this course, you can study Year Zero for a year first.

Graduate James Knott now works with fellow graduate Adi Kerr and the pair are freelancers working in different sectors of the broadcast industry. They were approached by the worlds largest house music label, Defected to produce a 60 minute documentary. They have worked for BBC, ITV, Radio 1, MTV and other clients including Mark Ronson so decided it was time to take up a studio at Banks Mill under the name of Studio JK:AK.
What our students say
I quickly became competent in narrative based filmmaking and during my study, I secured a business grant that helped me set up a small video production company, with some of my fellow students.
