Why choose this course?
- Our course provides a unique and exciting opportunity for those who wish to specialise in still and moving imagery, and work creatively across disciplines.
- Derby has a long tradition of both photography and film, and staff represent a wide range of visual arts practices, to give you expert knowledge and support.
About the course
The University is a member of D&AD (Design and Art Direction association) and within undergraduate courses is a member of the Association of Photographers(AOP), The British Institute of Professional Photography and MAGNUM Photographer's agency. Our course will help you to become versatile and creative in the application of knowledge and practice within the subject area of still and moving image. The course integrates theory and practice across lens-based media, dissolving the traditional boundaries between still and moving image to encourage both original thinking and individuality within a lively, challenging community.
Our academic team comes from a wide range of backgrounds with expertise in analogue photography and digital imaging, filmmaking and scriptwriting, fine art (painting and installation), history and theory. Staff are research-active, and the combination of their skills and experience will ensure an interdisciplinary approach to study, while supporting an integrated and informed student practice.
Throughout the course, you'll develop, and reflect upon, your practice with each stage building on the previous one. You will engage with the temporal and spatial significance of photography and film, and be supported through lectures, seminars, group workshops and tutorials. Our media store offers both digital and analogue equipment to the highest specifications, encouraging you to develop a wide range of skills, and enabling you to determine your own critical and creative practice.
Derby has a vibrant culture, with the multimedia centre QUAD, which hosts the successful International Photography Festival, Format, and you'll be encouraged to build contacts with other museums and galleries, relevant to your practice.
