Electronic
Submission, Marking and Feedback – update five
The e-Submission project
is on schedule and being received positively by both staff and
students. The project team recognise there are significant change
and cultural issues to address as this system will mean working in
different ways. The purpose of this update is to share resources and
help to support you in using the system for the first time and when
preparing to mark assignments.
Options for marking
include:
Online
marking using the Grademark tool
within Turnitin – There are some excellent resources to
introduce you to online marking and you can book individually on to
a staff development
session or arrange a team or programme based
session with the Learning Technology Advisers at learningtechs@derby.ac.uk
or call 01332 591865.
Print
to Mark – as part of the
implementation it was agreed to offer a print to mark service for
the first year to enable staff to manage their own transition to on
screen marking. This option is available in Blackboard, there are videos and text
based resources that give additional useful
information.
Alternative
Methods
Along side the
mainstream marking methods, we are conducting a pilot of audio and
visual feedback methodologies; additional
information explains the three options we are
going to evaluate. If you are interested in being involved in the
pilot please contact the Learning Technology
Advisers.
Support materials
include:
Plagiarism
support – The project board
agreed that Turnitin should be used as a formative tool and that all
students can submit as many times as they wished into the system.
The correct interpretation of an originality report is vital in
supporting students to improve and enhance their academic writing
skills. Support is given to students in the Check your
Originality section of the student support
website. Specific resources for support staff can be found here on the staff
support website. If you need further information please contact your
subject
librarian.
Student
support is being offered
primarily through the student esub website at www.derby.ac.uk/esub.
It would be worth having a look at the type of advice, support and
communications that are being offered to students. Additionally as
we enter the first major submission point there will be ‘eSub Road
Shows’ at all sites with Submission Clinics being offered by Student IT
Mentors. The Mentors are also available in all
libraries to support students outside of these specific events.
What
to do if the system is not working? In the
event of system failure there are clear instructions what to do.
There is a dedicated phone line (01332 593782) that you can call
which will have a recorded message explaining if there is an issue
with the system, this will also be published on UDo alerts. If there
are no known problems, you or your student may be the first people
to detect an issue. If this is the case call the IT Help Desk on
01332 591234. All of this information is available on this easy to
understand leaflet, please circulate this to your students. In the
event of a major system outage, we will publish an agreed extension
to submission, which you can then manage at your
discretion.
If you have any other
questions relating to e-Submission, online marking and feedback
please contact the Learning Technology
Advisers.
All previous
communications are available on the project
website should you wish to re-read any of the
information.
