Learning and Teaching Conference 2024

The 3rd annual Learning and Teaching Conference will take place at Kedleston Road on Wednesday 3 July 2024. The event will take place on-campus for a full day of workshops and papers. 

The focus of the event this year is ’Driving Student Engagement and Success’ exploring:   

We will explore the University's array of subjects and discipline areas through thought-provoking discussion, exploring current thinking, research and best practice in learning, teaching and assessment.   

There will be two keynote sessions: 

Academic Coaching and Student Success, led by Dr Emily McIntosh and Dr Melanie Pope 

Civic Pedagogy in Practice, led by Dr Cara Courage

Our Keynote Speakers

Dr Emily McIntosh has held a variety of leadership roles in learning, teaching and the student experience in several UK universities. She joined the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) as Director of Student Success in January 2023. Emily is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a National Teaching Fellow. She is an Executive Member & Trustee of the Heads of Educational Development (HEDG) group and an Independent Board Member of Trafford & Stockport College Group (TSCG). Emily has published widely on a variety of topics from academic advising, personal tutoring and peer learning to integrated practice.

Dr Melanie Pope's 30-year career in education encompasses practice and leadership in secondary, FE and HE contexts. She has trained hundreds of people to teach in all three sectors and has a passion for practices which help individual learners to flourish. Melanie is a national assessor for the Academic Professional Apprenticeship. She joined the University of Derby in 2018 as Associate Professor of Learning and Teaching and has led policy change and practice development in Personal Academic Tutoring, Peer-Assisted Learning, academic practice programmes and pedagogic research. Melanie's research and publications focus on academic practice development, coaching in HE, Growth Mindsets and the language of feedback.

Dr Cara Courage is a globally renowned placemaking leader, cultural and creative sector consultant-director and researcher and creative and organisational change agent, named in the top 10 of place-thinkers worldwide and a ‘strategy angel’ for the arts sector. Her most recent project is ‘Trauma-Informed Placemaking’, with Dr Anita McKeown, a research platform and forthcoming textbook (Routledge, 2024). Cara is Editor and Convenor of The Routledge Handbook of Placemaking (Routledge, 2021); Co-Editor of Creative Placemaking and Beyond (Routledge, 2018); and author of Arts in Place: The Arts, the Urban and Social Practice (Routledge, 2017).
