Why choose this course?

Nicholas Walsh, Fashion Studies student came second in the Clothes Show Young Designer of the Year competition with his red carpet dress design.

  • You'll have excellent placement opportunities. Madeleine Rigby worked as a product developer for menswear, underwear and loungewear at BC International.
  • You'll have the chance to exhibit internationally. Lucy Outhwaite and Ravinder Marathu showed their work on the catwalk at the three-day 15th Ningbo International Fashion Fair
  • You'll benefit from industry visits. Company designers at Sports Direct challenged first year students to come up with some bold new designs for SportsDirect.com's own sports and leisurewear brands.

About the course

During the first semester of your first year you'll be taught alongside the BA (Hons) Textile Design students where you will gain valuable skills such as knit and print, pattern cutting and manufacture. Contextual Studies and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) will continue through to the final year giving you a positive advantage within the fashion and textiles industries. This integration of skills and knowledge has produced innovative and creative textile and fashion designers.

We encourage all second years to take a work placement in industry, which will also give you an additional qualification - the Diploma in Professional Practice.  Placements are hard work but give you fantastic experience.  Fashion Studies student Krishna Haveliwa secured a placement at Vogue magazine in New York. She began work a few days before New York fashion week and part of her job involved attending a number of the shows.

What our students say

"My collection aims to promote the British manufacturing industry through fabrics, which include oilskins, tartan checks and Harris tweeds. Most of the materials in the collection have have been sourced from the UK. My inspiration comes from iconic British brands such as Burberry, Barbour and Laura Ashley. The print is inspired by the English country garden and the garments combine traditional fabrics with modern processes such as disperse dyeing." - Laura Fox
