The Diploma in Events Safety Management is ideal for practising event professionals who are responsible for health and safety or customer protection at festivals, sporting events, public gatherings, commercial and not for profit events, as well as large-scale and international association meetings.
You'll begin the course with a three day workshop in Events Safety Management, delivered by Richard Limb from Capita Symonds. You'll then attend a two day workshop in Crisis Communication and Reputation Management.
You'll also be studying Events Legislation online. On successful completion of this module you will meet the academic requirements for Tech IOSH.
All our online materials have been developed to be fully interactive and include video case studies from major events, talking heads from industry professionals and activities that encourage debate on our discussion board.

 Crisis Communication and Reputation Management What will I cover in this module?
This module will enable you to understand the necessity of preparing, planning and implementing a crisis communication plan as it is essential in the events industry to appreciate the lifecycle of a crisis and the importance of a correct situational response. The levels of command and the systems in place for any situation requiring emergency, crisis/disaster management will be investigated. The module will further explore the issues addressed in the Event Safety Plan albeit with a separate crisis communication plan intended to be utilised as a consequence of an emergency or crisis at an event. On successful completion of this module you will be able to: - Analyse the different types of crises and evaluate likely long and short term consequences of any such incident.

How much work will I need to do each week?
This module will be delivered over a two day workshop. As well as this, electronic and audio visual methods will be employed to deliver distance learning materials (DLM) to provide you with the basic concepts and theories that underpin the subject area. Distance learning materials and on-line tutorials will support you and reinforce learning. How will I be assessed?
100% coursework. Coursework 1 (100%): You will produce a crisis plan to be added to the event safety portfolio detailing your organisation's intended response to the identified emergency/crises. How many credits is it worth?

| Events Legislation What will I cover in this module?
This module is intended to provide you with an awareness of relevant legislation affecting the planning and implementation of event operations. You will be introduced to the intricacies of risk analysis and assessment, health and safety requirements, site and venue design, licensing, contracting and corporate manslaughter and wider sustainability issues. It will also provide you with the opportunity to contextualise legal frameworks to specific events and venues. On successful completion of this module you'll be able to analyse the legal frameworks that underpin events operations, health and safety requirements and risk assessment You'll study: - Human resources and work legislation including the application of the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), including the role of the Executive and The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
- Events venue legislation such as the application of The Event Safety Guide (2002).
- The Disability Discrimination Act (2005), The Guide to Fire Precautions in Existing places of Entertainment and Like Premises (1998) and the Licensing Act (2003).
- Civil Contingencies Act (2004) Local Arrangements for Civil Protection
- BS8901 Sustainability in Events Guide (2007), The Risk Management Standard (2002) and other industry benchmarks.
- An introduction to the law of tort, providing an awareness of the concept of 'negligence' and the forthcoming Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act (2007).
- The essence of events contract law, contracting and sub-contracting suppliers, breach of contract, remedies and frustration.
How much work will I need to do each week?

| Events Safety Management What will I cover in this module?
The events industry is multi-faceted and encompasses current and emerging festival, corporate and sporting events. To ensure events are conducted with due care, diligence and regard for the welfare of staff and customers, each event needs to identify and assess unique venue specific health and safety planning and management. This module incorporates size, scale, place and type of venue and how the type of facility, its design and technical capabilities impact on the event. The module comprises all phases of event logistics from the supply of customers, facilities, product transportation to crowd control, behaviour and crowd dynamics. To further develop knowledge of site and venue design and to assess how venue space is interpreted, positive and negative externalities and their corresponding legal requirements are factored into the planning process. As risk analysis remains a prevalent necessity in today's events industry, you will be introduced to the identification, contingency planning and management of financial, operational and event health and safety risk. On successful completion of this module you'll be able to: - Evaluate and assess the essential decision making processes for the choice of venue, facilities design and layout for a range of events.
- To identify, assess and analyse event specific health and safety, financial and operational risks.
- To produce an event safety plan incorporating event and venue evaluation, risk assessments, emergency procedures, waste disposal, security, crowd control, organisation, safety and welfare and sanitary provision.
You'll cover: - The role of the events safety management team and responsibility of the event organiser.
- The role of the events logistic manager including onsite issues, communication, crowd dynamics, ingress and egress of attendees, emergency procedures, the emergency services.
- Types of design and facilities used for events; old, modern; already constructed, purpose built.
- Crowd capacity; environmental issues, impact assessments, health and safety audits; legal requirements.
- Counter Terrorism issues including prevent, pursue, protect and prepare; terrorism issues around public spaces and mass gatherings.
- Energy sources including essential services, water, gas, electricity and sanitation, energy control systems, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and lighting.
- Technical issues such as structural capabilities, sound, light, staging and special effects; media coverage; additional structures.
- Management theories surrounding the physical layout and design of venues; suitability of venue; adaptation of venues, managing touring events in different venues.
How much work will I need to do each week?
This module aims to give you as much practical experience as possible. The module will be delivered over three full days with Event Safety Management scenarios and case studies from industry, key issues and practical workshops to allow scope for individual queries. Learning will be supported online with synchronous and asynchronous debate with fellow students and module leader on the Learning Management System. Online resources will be available to allow you to further explore the issues discussed in the class sessions. How will I be assessed?
100% coursework. Coursework 1 (100%): You'll produce a detailed Events Safety Plan for a real event, including a risk assessment and site plan. How many credits is it worth?

Your career
At the end of the course you'll have a University Diploma in Events Safety Management - an industry endorsed qualification that will directly improve your ability to do your job. You will also have met the academic requirements for Tech IOSH.
There may also be an opportunity to study on a postgraduate programme in Events Safety Management.

You'll be assessed on each of the three modules. You will also be required to produce an events safety plan and a crisis plan, as well as undertake a time-constrained assignment on events legislation.
