- We've developed this course in partnership with the key organisations in the events management industry, and it's co-funded by Leap Ahead, the Lifelong Learning Network for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
- This course is delivered online, so you'll be able to study at a time and place that's convenient for you.
- As you're already working in the events industry, you'll be able to develop the knowledge and skills you use in your job by doing work based modules during this course. And as there will be other people working in different sectors of the events industry doing this course, you'll have the opportunity to network, and share ideas and experiences.

 Event Management in PracticeWhat will I cover in this module? The events management industry is experiencing a rate of unrivalled expansion; the industry is now wide and diverse covering areas such as; festivals, meetings and incentives, local, national and international events, music and sporting events. Given the plethora of Events Management you will enter the market in the next few years this module will aim to provide the students with a practical experience in events management within a local context. It is essential that you experience the practical elements involved with events management in preparation for industry.
On completion of this module you'll be able to:
1. Undertake the development of an event, paying reference to the event selection and initiation process.
2. Identify and evaluate the event management process.
You'll study these areas;
How much work will I need to do each week? A two-hour weekly class for one semester. The class sessions will introduce key topics, provide practical workshops and allow scope for individual queries. Case studies will be used throughout to inform you. This module aims to provide you with the basics of event planning and management, however it is anticipated that the use of theory will be limited so as to give you as much practical experience as possible.
Distance E-Learning Teaching and Learning Strategy Electronic and audiovisual methods will be employed to deliver distance learning materials (DLM) to provide you with the basic concepts and theories that underpin the subject area. Distance learning materials and online tutorials will support you and reinforce learning.
How will I be assessed? An individual/group presentation (dependent on student numbers) proposing and justifying a live event. You must sell your event to the audience with particular attention to the reasons for the event, the choice of location, your target market and the feasibility of your event. | Event Public Relations What will I cover in this module? This module is designed to provide you with a solid foundation of the principles, definitions, history, management and practice of public relations. You will be introduced to the four-step process to public relations actions and campaigns, the role of public relations in the production of mass media messages, media relations, crisis communications, principles of opinion research, sponsorship event management, and persuasion in the service sector. You'll also be introduced to some of the practical skills of public relations including press release writing and media communications.
You'll study these areas;
How much work will I need to do each week? This module will consist of a mix of lectures, tutorials and student-centred learning. The lectures will introduce the concepts and the frameworks of the topics and issues covered by the module. The tutorial sessions will develop your understanding of these issues through the use of group work, industry focused case studies and analysis of public relations practices and real-world examples of public relations.
How will I be assessed? Group presentation lasting 20 minutes on the role of public relations in the service industry. Distance learners will do an on-line web presentation and web discussion on the role of public relations in the service industry. The web presentation will be no more than 1500 words.

| Event Venue Operations What will I cover in this module? Selecting the optimum venue in respect to a spectrum of client requirements is a key aspect of creating successful event solutions. This module has two foci, addressing the client and venue client perspectives of event relationships and provides you with an understanding of the role of venue finding agencies in matching client requirements with venue suitability and availability. This is an introduction to the role that venue finding agencies, Destination Management Companies, regional agencies and tourism boards play in creating business for their respective environments. Furthermore, the module outlines the plethora of venues competing for business/event expenditure and the strategic methods used to attract event business to the various venues. A brief introduction to venue design and set up will serve as a precursor to the second year Events Facilities and Design module. On completion of this module you will be able to: 1. Undertake research to select the most suitable venue for an event request from a third party brief. 2. Create a floor plan and venue lay out for a requested event. Areas you'll study;
How much work will I need to do each week? Lectures and seminars offer you the opportunity to study key topics in venue selection and operations. Field trips will be organised to provide the students first-hand exposure to venue finding, venue logistics and operations. Specialised venue planning, floor layout and logistics software may be used in class. You will be encouraged to develop their own critical skills as appropriate to management roles within the event organisations through the use of appropriate case studies. These will require you to develop their own solutions based on personal experience and research. Electronic and audiovisual methods will be employed to deliver distance learning materials (DLM) to provide you with the basic concepts and theories that underpin the subject area. Distance learning materials and online tutorials will support you and reinforce learning. How will I be assessed? You will create a group presentation of no more than 15 minutes to outline the key areas of the event including the event concept, and how the event meets the client’s requirements. The presentation will take place in a formal setting. For E-learning you will produce a blog within the VLE, outlining the key areas of the event. You will produce an individual report (1500 words) to fulfil the requirements of the client with a rationale of each of the decisions and a floor plan that have made in respect to the client brief. | Experiential Events What will I cover in this module?
Many organisations (public, private & not for profit), cities and countries have developed event strategies to enable them to compete in a sophisticated market thus using events as a base for development and a catalyst for creating memorable consumer ‘experiences’. This module will define Events Management, and evaluate its history and its role in the development of society. You will cover the growth of sport and music events within the parameters of scale and scope and the rich diversity available to the community. You will also examine music and sport within political, socio-cultural and economic environment to aid the students’ understanding of the importance of events in modern day society. How much work will I need to do each week? How will I be assessed? 100% coursework. Coursework 1 (50%): You will conduct a review of personal strengths and weaknesses evolving from a SWOT analysis. This analysis will lead to the development of a project to address areas of weakness. The project/activity must have SMART objectives, set milestones for achievement and measure success. The customer experience relies much on the skills and competencies of front line and support staff it is important that organisations have effective systems and procedures for managing human resources. Managers of small businesses often have sole responsibility for managing people. In larger organisations line managers play an important role in human resource management. The aim is to encourage you to manage their own development against a range of transferable skills under the following headings: interpersonal skills; working with and relating to others; personal skills; self-development; application of academic knowledge and information technology. It aims to classify and analyse the distinct target markets within the sector and establish a framework for the evaluation of the needs of these groups, and enable you to identify appropriate strategies for target selection. By developing an appreciation, and evaluation, of these sectors you will be able to respond to the dynamic challenges in managing event’s resources. You will be expected to undertake secondary research and apply theory in a practical, applied context. | Events Safety Management What will I cover in this module? The events industry is multi-faceted and encompasses current and emerging festival, corporate and sporting events. To ensure events are conducted with due care, diligence and regard for the welfare of staff and customers, each event needs to identify and assess unique venue specific health and safety planning and management. This module incorporates size, scale, place and type of venue and how the type of facility, its design and technical capabilities impact on the event. The module comprises all phases of event logistics from the supply of customers, facilities, product transportation to crowd control, behaviour and crowd dynamics. To further develop knowledge of site and venue design and to assess how venue space is interpreted, positive and negative externalities and their corresponding legal requirements are factored into the planning process. As risk analysis remains a prevalent necessity in today’s events industry, you will be introduced to the identification, contingency planning and management of financial, operational and event health and safety risk.
