Personal Safety and Security
Derby is one of the safest cities in the UK and although they have happened and unfortunately may again, instances of personal attack on the street are extremely rare whilst Buxton is a picturesque elegant Victorian country market town with a very low crime rate.
When such crimes do occur they are not pre-planned but carried out on the spur of the moment. Most are carried out by someone who you have already met, in a club, or pub for example and rarely by a total stranger.
Often these people's attentions will be unwanted and unsolicited, if you find that you are being "pestered" in this way you should politely but firmly make it clear to the person that you are not interested. If the attention persists then seek support, and do not allow yourself to be alone with them. If this persists it may constitute harassment and we are very happy to provide you with constructive advice in complete confidence should you suffer this kind of attention.
When you go out at night, form a group, stay together and go home together. Look after each other and if one of you does drink a little too much take care of them; NEVER abandon anyone especially if they are under the influence of alcohol as they are not capable of caring for or defending themselves.
-
Be aware of your surroundings at all times e.g. where you are, what is going on around you and who is nearby etc, always know your route home, your routes of escape and where to get help.
-
Keep your mobile charged and easily accessible
-
Be suspicious of anyone that might be following you, always try to walk with a friendIf you think you are being followed stay in populated and lit areas and go into the first public place you find, such as a pub or shop. Keep looking back so they know you have noticed them and you won't be easily surprised.
-
Avoid dark streets, paths, spaces surrounded by high bushes or other cover and any especially secluded places. Keep to well lit places and walk near the curb
-
When you are out socialising NEVER leave your drink unattended it is easy for someone to administer a drug to you through your drink, it will make you appear to be drunk and everyone will assume that you are. Use a bottle rather than a glass, you can keep control of it easier.
-
Go out in a group, stay in a group and go home in a group
-
Use a taxi and don't walk home alone
-
If a car pulls up by the curb, e.g. if the occupant asks for directions; don't get too close to the car so you can't be easily grabbed.
-
Don't wear earphones while walking or jogging, even during the day, you may not hear someone approach
-
Consider obtaining a personal attack alarm
-
When unlocking your car or front door get your keys ready in advance so that you are not fumbling for them
-
When you're home, keep doors and accessible windows locked and secured and don't open your door to strangers
If you are seriously concerned about your immediate safety inform the Police on 999
Derby and Buxton are safe; and it is not our intention to frighten anyone but the above advice is sensible and useful wherever you may be, here, at home or on holiday.
