Cycle security
Cycle thefts are a very unusual event here but they do occasionally occur. The Security Team will do its best to prevent your cycle from being stolen but the responsibility for its safety remains very much yours. We offer you the following advice which if followed will very much reduce the likelihood of you becoming a victim of bike crime -
- Only leave your bike at the designated cycle stands on campus which are in a conspicuous place or covered by CCTV cameras.
- If you feel that your cycle is so valuable that you are unwilling to leave it in a designated place you should not bring it, as there are no other acceptable or safe places for it to be left.
- Always lock your bike when you leave it, even if it is only for a minute most cycle thefts are opportunist and carried out on the spur of the moment, don't make it easy for them to take yours!
- Purchase a good quality D lock, or one with a thick steel cable, we find that most bikes are stolen because they only have cheap cable locks which are easy to cut through and offer no deterrent. Lock your bike through the frame and the rear wheel. If you only lock through a wheel it can be removed and the rest taken.
- Remove detachable parts such as the saddle, lights, pumps etc and beware of quick release fittings which enable wheels to be stolen in seconds.
- Mark your bike with a postcode or student id - that way if it is recovered it can be returned to you. Take a note of the frame number, often cycles are taken simply to get from A to B and not with any intention to keep them permanently. They are often found abandoned or recovered from a thief and the Police cannot reunite them with owners owing to lack of good identification.
- Take a photo of your bike in case a description is needed.
