Waste and recycling
Objectives and Targets
Our objectives and targets for waste are challenging but achievable. Progress against targets is reviewed 6 monthly and our targets reviewed annually.
» Why is this important?
Each person in England generates approximately 0.5 tonnes of waste per year. For every tonne of waste we produce, commercial, industrial and construction businesses produce another six tonnes!
No matter how we dispose of it, waste will always impact in some way on the environment.
- Recycling uses energy
- Incinerating produces ash and carbon dioxide
- Landfilling means we lose valuable resources and produce methane gas (as biodegradable waste rots down), which contribute to air pollution and global warming.
We need to dispose of waste in the least harmful way following the principles of the waste hierarchy at all times.
» Where are we now?
During August 2011 - July 2012 our tutorial sites generated 503 tonnes of waste. Of this 300 tonnes was recycled giving us a percentage recycled of 59%, which means we have already exceeded our target to achieve 50% recycling by 2013.
The percentage of waste we recycle and the amount of carbon dioxide we generate are two of a suite of KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) which are used to demonstrate institutional sustainability. Progress towards achieving our KPIs is monitored closely by Governing Council.
» What you can do
Space approved for landfill is set to run out in the next five to ten years so it is vital that we do all we can now to increase re-use and recycling. To make sure we meet our target of recycling 80% of the waste generated from tutorial sites by 2013, we need your help!
Please:
- Think before you bin
- Use the recycling bins provided
- Do not put food, tea bags, fruit, crisp packets, liquids or polystyrene cups in the recycling bins
- Encourage friends and colleagues to recycle.
The list below details all things which can be put in the mixed recycling bins:
- Empty plastic bottles/yoghurt pots
- Cardboard (grey or brown)
- Cans
- Tins
- Paper
- Glass bottles/coffee jars
- Confidential waste (if shredded)
- CDs and their cases
- Envelopes
- Newspapers
- Magazines
- Leaflets

Waste Carrier
The University of Derby is a licenced waste carrier. Our licence number is CB/SP3974/BT (PDF, 254 kb) which expires 25 April 2016. This allows us to carry waste directly to waste recycling or disposal sites.
Exemptions
We have exemptions from the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010 for the treatment of waste wood and waste plant matter and the speading of mulch to allow us to chip our grounds waste for use on our estate. We also have exemptions for the manual treatment of waste i.e. furniture dismantling for recycling
