Photo-voltaic panels
Solar photo-voltaic panels (PV's)
Solar Photo-Voltaics (PV's) at the Kedleston Road site of the University of Derby
Did you know....
The panels are fixed at 10 degrees to reduce wind resistance and maximise output from the space available
Apart from cleaning annually, the PVs are maintenance free and with no moving parts, should generate electricity for the next 30 years. They are guaranteed for 25 years.
”Roger Dickinson - Energi
Solar PV relies on daylight, not sunlight. Solar PV generates electricity by capturing the daylight energy of the sun in electrical (DC) form. This is then relayed through a series of isolators and inverters to feed directly back into the University's own distribution system. This enables carbon free electricity, generated by the sun, to replace electricity generated by fossil fuels.
- On avarage, for every kilowatt hour generated by this method, 568 grams of C02 emissions are saved in the UK.
- To put this into perspective, an average household in the UK uses between 3,000 and 5,000 kWh per anum. This produces a carbon footprint of between 1.7 tonnes to 2.84 tonnes of carbon emitted into the atmosphere. Imagine what commercial buildings emit!
- Our PVs were installed in April 2010 and in the first full year of operation, they generated 21,756 kWhs (figures recorded from June 1st 2010).
