Go Green Week 2013

Between the 11th and 15th February 2013, we held a full week of events to celebrate Go Green Week. This started on the Monday with our artist in residence, Del Coombs, University cleaner, creating a giant scultpure from a day's worth of waste saved from the Friday before. Other demonstrations on how to avoid waste included using an old bike to make a smoothie from fruit which would normally have gone to waste and bags made from old shirts and ties.

Tuesday was all about travel and we had recycled bikes on display, a Renault Twizy (it's an electric car) and the chance to navigate the Segway around a slalom course of traffic cones.

Wednesday was all things environmental and started with a display and talk on bird ringing by the Sorby Breck Ringing Group, interative displays and games all focusing on the environment. There was even a visit from the Barn Owl, Dom (or was it Dick?).

Thursday and Friday we took the environmental roadshow to the Devonshire at Buxton where we were joined on the Carbonopoly board by a polar bear. All good fun.

N.B James Brown (Travel and Transport Manager) decided to drive the Twizy to  Buxton to join in the fun. Unfortunately for James, the Twizy has no doors, heater nor radio and the 50 mile power limit did not allow for Buxton hills. The little car ran out of power on Ashbourne Road where James made an unscheduled pitstop at the Book Shop for a top up or should we say "plug in".
