Carbon management
We aim to deliver a 27% reduction in carbon emissions by 2020 from a 2005 baseline. Our revised Carbon Management Plan details how this will be achieved
Energy Officer Anne Downes receiving our certificate of achievement from Energy and Climate Change Minister David Kidney.
The University of Derby takes its commitment to the environment very seriously and has undertaken to significantly reduce its future carbon footprint. To ensure this is achieved in the most efficient way possible, we have re-visited the original Carbon Management Plan written in 2009. Version 2 of the Plan incorporates our current environmental position and celebrates our achievements to date. In it we have committed to a 27% reduction in absolute carbon emissions by 2020 from a 2005 baseline.
Having carried out an extensive programme of improvement works to our buildings, including a £14m re-fenestration of our ageing tower blocks in Derby, we are now turning our efforts into other avenues of carbon reduction. By working to a programme of staff and student environmental awareness-raising, we will not only educate future generations, but also make a difference today.
2010 saw the installation of renewable energy technologies at our main site in Derby which in addition to reducing the burden on the national grid, also demonstrates to the wider public our continued commitment to reducing emissions.
As Pro Vice Chancellor, I am delighted to see the continued commitment and enthusiasm across the institution towards the environment and to making a difference for ourselves and our future.

How we will achieve our 27% reduction in carbon emissions is detailed in Version 2 of our CMP (PDF, 402kb).
Delivering a reduction in carbon emissions is one of the University's KPI's (Key Performance Indicators) and as such it is closely monitored by Governing Council.
Core Team
Our Carbon Management Plan is implemented by a Core Team of representatives from departments and faculties across the University. Meeting quarterly, our team of lecturers, support staff and technicians discuss future actions, plans and suggestions and disseminate information through their own teams, offices and colleagues. This ensures that the carbon management message is spread as widely as possible.
Our Terms of Reference (Word 31.5kb) have now been agreed and ratified by the team.
