Pre-sessional English courses

If you want improve your English language skills before you start an undergraduate or postgraduate degree course here at Derby, our pre-sessional English courses can help you.

Chinese student in a seminar

You will improve your general English skills and the English skills you need to do well on your course. You will study in class for 21 hours per week, in addition to self-study. The length of the course you take will depend on your English language level when you apply (see tables below)*.

Your reading, writing, listening and speaking will be assessed at the end of the course. If you complete these assessments successfully, you will have achieved an English language equivalent of IELTS 6.0.

*All courses can only run if there is sufficient student demand.

Our pre-sessional English courses

In order to meet new visa requirements, as well as having the overall IELTS grade indicated below, you must have an IELTS 4.0 (or equivalent) in all areas (speaking, listening, reading, writing).

*Please note that this is the minimum requirement. If you are a postgraduate student you are strongly advised to take a longer course if possible as the more progress you can make with your language the better chance of success you have in your degree.
