About the course

You can start this flexible course in either September or January, and study it full time or part time, either online or on campus, or a mixture of both. So you'll be able to fit your studies around your interests and career needs.

If you choose to study online, you will need to come to Derby for about ten days in total during the course.

If you study this course full time, you'll study six modules during your first two semesters and then go on a placement as part of the Environmental Health in Practice module. During the final part of this course, you'll complete a dissertation as part of the Independent Study module that is equivalent to four modules.

If you study part time you'll take one or two modules each semester for two years, while you're also doing your placement. You'll then complete your dissertation over one year.

You'll carry out practical training as part of the Environment Health in Practice module, which consists of a minimum of 130 days working in a placement. Your placement is very important as it will help to prepare for the Independent Study module and enable you to meet some of the professional requirements of both the CIEH and REHIS.

If you're currently employed as a technical officer within Local Government, you can study this course part time and complete the placement during, or in addition, to your normal work as long as you're able to cover all areas adequately.

All our staff are very supportive, friendly and approachable, so you'll get the help you need with any academic problems you have during this course.

Your career

When you've completed this course, you'll be well on your way to becoming an environmental health practitioner, with potential career opportunities, following professional qualification, in Local Government, the Health Protection Agency, the Environment Agency, private industry and consultancy.

How you're assessed

The majority of the programme is assessed by coursework. There's a compulsory practical food inspection exam, for which attendance at Derby is required by the accrediting body.

Anything else?

The course is accredited by the CIEH and so it will help you move on to this body's professional assessments. Taking their assessments will enable you to become a qualified environmental health practitioner.

While you're undertaking the work based learning, you will complete the CIEH experiential learning portfolio. When you've finished the course, if you want to be registered with the professional body, you must take a range of professional assessments.
