Students on our Civil Engineering and Construction courses have the opportunity to undertake a work placement between the second and third year, which gives vital industry experience. You might also be eligible for a Diploma in Professional Practice on top of your degree. Recent students have found placements with world-renowned construction company Tarmac, as well as many other small and medium-sized enterprises.
Many of our courses are professionally accredited, which means the appropriate professional body has judged it to be relevant and high quality. As well as giving you confidence in the course, accreditation usually means you can become a member of that professional body and attend its events. Sometimes you can gain professional qualifications alongside your degree or via a fast-track route afterwards.
Our BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering and BEng (Hons) Civil and Infrastructure Engineering courses are accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). The BEng (Hons) Civil and Infrastructure Engineering degree is also accredited as partially satisfying the requirements for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). You can visit www.jbm.org.uk for further information. This will lead to Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (MCIHT), and the Institute of Highway Engineers (MIHE) following a period of relevant experience and a professional review.
Our Civil Engineering and Construction courses are based at Markeaton Street, just a short walk away from the city centre and the University’s main site at Kedleston Road. The site houses specialist equipment for technology, engineering, arts and design courses, and has some interesting design and construction features that control heat, maximize natural daylight and harness the heat from the sun. Take the virtual tour here.
The Big Show
