Our mathematics courses are accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), which means you can apply for student membership and then associate membership when you graduate. Becoming a member gives you access to industry news, journals, networking events and seminars, as well as being the first step towards Chartered Mathematician (C.Math) status. We encourage and support students to take a work placement, either for one year or for shorter periods of time. These provide valuable experience, contacts and usually a salary. Students undertaking a year-long placement may also be eligible for an additional qualification – a Diploma in Professional Practice. Students have found placements with National Air Traffic Services (NATS), Serco’s traffic control centre, HSBC and the Department of Health in London.
We are constantly looking for new ways to make our teaching as relevant as possible to your future career so keeping in touch with industry is important. Organisations regularly set our students realistic projects. This approach allows students to apply what they are learning in the classroom to the world of business. For example, students enjoy working on the Mathematics Group Project, where managers from industry set a real and complex problem to solve. One year, for example, staff from Bombardier challenged students to optimise the turnaround time of the Virgin train fleet at its UK maintenance depot. More recently, students have used their mathematical skills to make production processes more efficient for Bosch.
Mathematics courses are currently based at the University’s main site at Kedleston Road. From 2017, they will be based at Markeaton Street. It is just outside the city centre and all our halls of residence are within walking distance. You’ll find easy access to everything you’ll need, from local facilities and transport to shopping and nightlife. With small class sizes you will be well supported in your studies. We also offer a weekly mathematics drop-in clinic and our staff are always willing to see students on a one-to-one basis.
The Big Show
The Big Show is the University end of year Undergraduate Degree Show for students involving a series of live events and exhibitions across the city of Derby. Our Mathematics students showcase their work at our Kedleston Road and Markeaton Street site. The Degree show offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the very best of emerging contemporary art and design practice from our final year students. Their work explores the issues and subjects of today's world also looks ahead predicting and setting the trends of tomorrow.
