Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Electrical and Electronic Engineering “The University has links with some big companies in the electrical and electronic fields so you can gain useful contacts and experience.” Dawn Brian

Our Courses:

Our FdEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering course will train you in the technologies of electrical and electronic systems. We’ve developed this part time course for students who are already working in a relevant area. The exciting thing about the course is that your employer becomes a partner in your education and you continue to study in your workplace. We encourage you to take a work placement for either one year or for shorter periods of time. These give you experience, contacts and usually a salary. If you undertake a year-long placement you may also be eligible to receive a Diploma in Professional Practice.

The BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering is accredited by The Institution of Engineering and Technology, so you can be sure you’ll be developing essential skills that the industry demands.

Derby’s jobs market is well suited to your skills. The city has one of the most highly-skilled workforces in the UK, with 12% of its employees in hi-tech roles – that’s four times the national average. It also has the highest average salary outside of London.

In Spring 2014, the University opened a £10 million Institute for Innovation in Sustainable Engineering. It has specialist resources for advanced manufacturing, product design and development and electronic solutions.

Markeaton Street

Our Electrical and Electronic Engineering courses are based at Markeaton Street, just a short walk away from the city centre and the University’s main site at Kedleston Road. The site houses specialist equipment for technology, engineering, arts and design courses, and has some interesting design and construction features that control heat, maximize natural daylight and harness the heat from the sun. Take the virtual tour here.

The Big Show

The Big Show is the University end of year Undergraduate Degree Show for students involving a series of live events and exhibitions across the city of Derby. Our Electrical and Electronic Engineering students showcase their work at our Markeaton Street site. The Degree show offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the very best of emerging contemporary art and design practice from our final year students. Their work explores the issues and subjects of today's world also looks ahead predicting and setting the trends of tomorrow.
