Schedule for the day

During the visit, Princess Anne was welcomed by the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, John Bather, who introduced HRH to guests including:

  • University Vice-Chancellor Professor John Coyne
  • Lord Ralph Kerr, High Sheriff of Derbyshire
  • Councillor Mrs Joyce Sanders, Chairman of Derbyshire County Council
  • Councillor Barbara Jackson, Mayor of the City of Derby.

Professor Coyne then introduced HRH to guests including:

  • Liz Fothergill, University Pro-Chancellor
  • Julia Scott, Chief Executive of the College of Occupational Therapists
  • Dee Christie, Chairman of the College of Occupational Therapists.

Student demonstrations

HRH then met many other guests including: Faculty of Education, Health and Sciences Dean Professor Helen Langton, and Subject Head for Occupational Therapy Joan Kenyon.

Joan introduced the student demonstrations including kitchen assessments, an upper limb experiential workshop, hoist and wheelchair transfer demonstrations and how technology is used to teach the anatomy of limbs.

Speeches and unveiling of the commemorative plaque

Our Vice-Chancellor Professor John Coyne gave a speech and our Pro-Chancellor Liz Fothergill invited HRH to unveil a plaque commemorating the visit. Dee Christie, Chair of the College of Occupational Therapists gave a vote of thanks praising the facilities enjoyed by todays’ students at Derby.

Presentation

Student Navinder Vilkhou, 35, then presented Princess Anne with a bouquet of flowers. A wheelchair user, from Birmingham, Navinder is a part time Occupational Therapy student and also works as an Information Coordinator with Ideal For All, based at the Independent Living Centre in Sandwell, Birmingham. He described his role as "a great honour".
