How art therapy can help soothe women with extreme emotions during and after pregnancy - Professor Susan Hogan
Professor Susan Hogan, Professor in Cultural Studies and Art Therapy
Professor Susan Hogan has been researching how art therapy could be the perfect medium to help soothe women who may face a rollercoaster of extreme emotions during and after their pregnancies.
An international expert in art therapy, Professor Hogan has contributed a chapter for the book Art Therapy and Anger, which is about the experiences of pregnant women and new mothers.
Professor Hogan ran a series of art therapy workshops for new mothers and interviewed them about their pregnancy and birth experiences with support from the maternity liaison unit of a local hospital and the UK National Childbirth Trust.
Professor Hogan maintains that art therapy is an excellent medium in which new mothers can express strong emotions, which may range from loss of their former self to guilt, anger and resentment.
