Collaborative working with humanities specialists

We have designed a classroom in an attempt to redefine the way the traditional classroom works. There is no 'podium' or other focal point where a teacher stands to address the class and the space also features a wealth of new features including:

  • five plasma TV screens with full internet access and a projection screen
  • six learning zones, with easily movable tables and chairs
  • glass walls which can be written on.

Humanities Specialists, Claire, Graham and Helen, offered to host a group of Year 5 children within the classroom undertaking some citizenship work, related to rules and laws.

They designed a problem solving session whereby the children were specialists in the field of town planning and they were to improve the difficulties of an imaginary town focusing particularly on road safety.

Within their collaborative groups, the children explored the present difficulties of different stakeholders and came up with their own ideas before making decisions that were appropriate to everyone.

The children had an enjoyable afternoon and the town plan and ideas are on display within their classroom where they are still coming up with new suggestions.
