Social Science

There's a wide range of topics to choose from

Michael Richards

Michael Richards, one of our current students from BA (Hons) Sociology.

There is an excellent range of modules to choose from in a wide choice of areas from sociology. This has helped me to decide on my future career path.

Within Social Science, we offer a range of courses if you are interested in the area of sociology. You'll explore a wide variety of topics, against a backdrop of massive social change in marriage, sexual attitudes, family, work, international relations, rising crime and increasing insecurity, we examine the forces that bind individuals into social groups, and the issues that split communities apart.

Choose from our flexible courses

We offer flexible courses allowing you to study a variety of subjects whilst completing one degree. You could study our BA (Hons) Sociology course which looks at traditional as well as current sociological issues from inequality to the cult of celebrities.

We also offer sociology in the Joint Honours Scheme:

A joint honours course allows you to be flexible in what you choose to study by focusing on two or three areas of a degree at the same time.

International learning opportunities

If you study BA (Hons) Sociology, you'll have the opportunity to study abroad, currently in Prague. This will help you to develop your confidence and independence. You'll also have the chance to complete a work placement during stage two of your course. This will help you to boost your career prospects when you graduate.

Our staff are recognised internationally

Dr Kristin Aune has taken part in a number of events based around her book about feminism and she has spoken to Students' Unions and women's groups about the issues. As a keynote speaker at conferences, she is regularly asked to discuss her research findings.

Many of the team have produced publications and conference papers, contributing to knowledge across the sector. Dr Frank Faulkner, for example, has contributed to the recently published book Promoting and Producing Evil.
