This subject is a little out of the proverbial comfort zone, but, as far as Jean-Jacques was concerned, increasingly anything that linked with this kind of 'progress' was not that desirable. It takes us away from our 'natural' truth and virtue, you see. Anyway, he did have some technical and mechanical interests in his earlier years particularly journeying back from Turin to Annecy around 1729.
Rousseau and his 'friend', M. Bâcle, were given a Hiero Fountain to finance their trip home from Turin. The idea was to entertain patrons of various roadside hostelries and thus obtain free board and lodge along the way.
