Islam and Education Research Cluster (IERC)
Rania Hafez
The IERC will explore the interface between Islam and Education in Britain today as this is expressed in the curriculum and teaching in schools, colleges and universities.
Our research will be around five strands:
- (1) Muslim schools and colleges and their role in raising students' aspirations and achievement;
- (2) the experiences of Muslim pupils, students and teachers in both state and independent sector schools, colleges and universities;
- (3) approaches to education about Islam within the state and independent sectors and
- (4) the distinctness of Islamic approaches to education,
- (5) Muslim teachers' professionalism and professional identity.
The cluster aims to create a forum for critical engagement and debate through regular seminars that bring together educationalists both from within the University and the wider community.
Primarily aimed at Muslim teachers and educationalists, the cluster welcomes all colleagues who have an interest in developing their knowledge and understanding of Islam and its role within education.
