Changing Higher Education
Professor Dennis Hayes
The catalyst for a new approach to Higher Education in the UK was the Report of the National Committee of Inquiry into Higher Education (1997) chaired by Lord Dearing. Since that report there is less concern with the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake and a new focus on the student experience and 'student satisfaction' within a more 'business-like' orientation. One possibly unintended consequence of the recent changes has been what many call a 'managerialist' focus often leading to bureaucratisation. This research cluster explores the positive and negative developments in HE since the Dearing Report.
