Diabetes is recognised internationally as a major health problem. The estimated diabetes prevalence for 2010 had risen to 285 million, representing 6.4% of the world's adult population. In the UK alone an overwhelming 2.8 million people exist with diabetes and there are up to another 850,000 people with diabetes who have the condition and don't know it (Diabetes UK 2011).
