Learning Beyond Registration (LBR) is a vital part of developing competent, capable health service practitioners prepared to deliver a dynamic, flexible, quality, client-focused service. If you're employed by the NHS in the East Midlands then you may be eligible for fee-free access to our LBR modules and/or programmes. You'll need to supply evidence of approval from your line manager and Trust Education Lead when you apply.
About this module
The number of individuals diagnosed with dementia related disorders is expected to significantly rise in the next few decades. In line with the National Dementia Strategy (DoH 2009), this module develops a critical understanding of positive approaches in care for an increasing ageing population, their families and carers. It will enable you to consider how such an approach to care can prepare them for future challenges in an ever changing, ever growing and increasingly complex sphere of professional practice.
The module examines key concepts and principles of contemporary dementia care which you can draw on to develop your own care practice and inform future service development. Through a process of critical enquiry you will be encouraged to review accepted values and belief systems and to promote person-centred practice.
The module aims to develop an advanced practitioner capable of working independently within their practice setting with individuals living with dementia across the lifespan who have complex and/or challenging needs.
Module content
You will develop an advanced understanding of the key theoretical frameworks for understanding dementia including the management of emotional distress, challenging behaviours, risk issues, under detection and diagnosis of dementia and the use of anti psychotic medications. Values based practice and compassionate, person centred care is firmly embedded within the teaching and learning of the module. You will also explore cognitive and behavioural methods of intervention, the impact of stigma and social exclusion and the effect of dementia on families and carers.
Throughout you will:
- Develop an advanced understanding of the concept of mental health and well-being in individuals in later life who suffer from dementia and its effect on the individual, family and carers
- Address critical issues in the care of individuals in later life with mental health problems regarding detection, diagnosis and evidence based treatment for individuals living with dementia
- Develop skills to work with a positive, person centered approach with behaviours that challenge
- Develop advanced interpersonal and communication skills in which positive and compassionate relationships can be formed with individuals their families and carers.
- Develop an advanced understanding of multidisciplinary perspectives and address critical issues in care and service delivery including barriers to positive care
- Critically examine how carers may contribute to enhancing the quality of life of clients, and how professionals can support them by identifying their needs
You will participate in a range of teaching and learning methods including lectures, small-group work, student-led seminars, problem-based learning scenarios and online learning. The module values the expertise of service users and carers and they will contribute significantly to the teaching and learning experience.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate a range of advanced interpersonal and communication skills which will enable positive interactions with individuals with dementia, their families and carers.
- Implement and critically evaluate evidence based approaches to care that impact positively on individuals with dementia, their families and carers.
- Critically discuss organisational, structural or personal barriers that could impact on positive approaches and role performance that enable care and identify strategies to overcome these
- Critically appraise the contribution from service users and carer engagement in current service delivery to achieve positive outcomes to care.
