About this module

The number of individuals diagnosed with dementia related disorders is expected to significantly rise in the next few decades.  In line with the National Dementia Strategy (DoH 2009), this module develops a critical understanding of positive approaches in care for an increasing ageing population, their families and carers.  It will enable you to consider how such an approach to care can prepare them for future challenges in an ever changing, ever growing and increasingly complex sphere of professional practice.

The module examines key concepts and principles of contemporary dementia care which you can draw on to develop your own care practice and inform future service development.  Through a process of critical enquiry you will be encouraged to review accepted values and belief systems and to promote person-centred practice.

The module aims to develop an advanced practitioner capable of working independently within their practice setting with individuals living with dementia across the lifespan who have complex and/or challenging needs.

You will also explore cognitive and behavioural methods of intervention, the impact of stigma and social exclusion and the effect of dementia on families and carers.

  • Develop an advanced understanding of multidisciplinary perspectives and address critical issues in care and service delivery including barriers to positive care
