“The lecturers at Derby are accessible and very helpful with providing guidance and direction. They've provided me with valuable feedback and genuinely want to help me to learn and develop professionally as a future manager”
– Jolene King
Jolene is studying the Masters in Human Resource Management.
I'd been working in human resources for over a year and realised that in order to advance my career I needed a CIPD qualification.
One of the best elements of the programme is the 3 day residential
This gave me the opportunity to apply some of the classroom learning in a practical setting.
The teaching methods are generally lectures, tutorials and guest lectures which were very helpful in converting theory into real life situations. Each lecturer has their own teaching style and I found that the more interactive the session the more I enjoyed it and was able to recall the lecture content.
It's a demanding programme
I signed up for a mentor with the Employee Mentoring scheme through the University and she was helpful with identifying what skills I needed for studying and for my future career. She also provided much needed support during the challenging periods, and bonding with classmates and sharing ideas also helped.
I got lots of support
The lecturers at Derby are accessible and very helpful with providing guidance and direction. They've provided me with valuable feedback and genuinely want to help me to learn and develop professionally as a future manager.
Classes had a real cultural mix
I studied with students from the UK, India, Pakistan, The Gambia, Nigeria, U.S.A, Canada, Hungary, Ghana and China. This brought a set of diverse ideas and experiences and enriched my appreciation of cultural differences and how these can impact on HRM practices.
I'd recommend studying the programme at Derby
There's the option of starting in September or January and when you've finished you can gain graduate membership status with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), subject to Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
It's a really good qualification to attain if your aim is to work in the field of Human Resources.
