The ‘Showtime’ concept for this years marketing and promotional materials for the Degree Show was designed by final year BA (Hons) Graphic Design student, Ben Edwards.

“My intentions for the degree show designs were to create a striking visual concept that could be applied throughout various formats from print to web, and equally the different events that would be taking place.

 

The general concept was to portray the idea that the University of Derby was opening its doors to show off its creative talent. The degree show invites were on white with different coloured beams, to reflect the diverse variety of fresh talent on show. The concept was also applied in a similar way to the fashion show designs using black with vibrant pink coloured beams highlighting the glamour and glitz of a fashion show”.

 

Designers statement

“Ideas, ‘process’ and aesthetics are the key factors behind my approach to design. My main interest within design lie in print, however I believe that a visual solution should be born out of a sound understanding of the communication problem put forward in the brief, and that the resulting ideas may lend themselves to other creative formats.

 

I aim to achieve a balance between idea and aesthetics, and while I feel that it is important for good design to engage on an intellectual level – I believe that ideas should be complimented through aesthetically pleasing design, and attention to detail. This said, I consciously look to avoid unnecessarily stylising my work, by which I mean all elements of the visual solution have reason and intention behind them. Equally, I am interested in the hand made, and although many of my outcomes are realized through Mac or Pc, they are rooted in illustrative and handmade processes.

 

I hope that my portfolio is beginning to reflect these interests, as well as showing I am willing and able to apply myself throughout the broad spectrum that is Graphic Design. From ideas generation through to a final visual solution, however it may be realised”.
