Zhuoran Zhang is from China. She's studying BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance.
In 2009 she won The NDLSCA Award for Best Stage One Accounting student, and again in 2010 she won The NDLSCA Award for Best Stage Two Accounting student.
The right course for me
I've moved from a career in nursing to study the BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance, and I realise I've made the right career move for me!
The course not only provides me with the fundamental accounting and business knowledge, but is also designed to encourage students to incorporate the theories into the real business scenarios. Moreover, the exemptions from getting a professional qualification, such as CIMA and ACCA, make this degree course more attractive.
It's rewarding being able to use the knowledge learnt from classes to interpret data into useful financial information and understand some basic economic phenomena.
There are challenges too. You need to work hard from year one in order to be able to keep up in year two and three. Furthermore, you need to have good time management and organising skills to ensure sufficient self-study hours because some of the modules are student-led.
Studying at Derby
The experience of studying at Derby University has been amazing. All the lecturers are very supportive and friendly. Staff at the library and Career Development Center are very helpful. There are always extra curriculum activities and programmes you can join in, which help students to develop new skills and enhance employability
I've taken part in two schemes run by the Career Development Center, the Employer Mentoring scheme and University of Derby Award. Through these I've met some wonderful people and obtained additional knowledge and skills which will help my career.
I would definitely recommend a degree at Derby because of its friendly atmosphere and excellent teaching staff, facilities and online resources.
Winning the award - 2009
I'm so pleased to have won this award. It was a wonderful surprise and certainly one of the proudest experiences I've ever had so far in my life. I feel my hard work during the first year has been recognised and appreciated.

I am so pleased and proud to have won the NDLSCA Award for Best Stage Two Accounting student. I'm thankful for all the generous help and support from my tutors.
