The benefits of coaching

What are the benefits of coaching to me as a manager?

Releasing potential

Being able to coach provides you with an additional inter-disciplinary skill set to release potential in others.

While 'management' is more akin with being task focused, coaching sits more closely with 'leadership'. Knowing how to, when to or where to coach is essential to surviving in modern business.

To manage effectively you need to know when to manage or train, and when to lead or develop your workforce so that you can successfully manage performance. Being able to coach will help you do this.

Motivating staff and colleagues

An effective coach, manager or leader focuses on the individual's needs, motivation and ability to release potential.

They will know how to help an individual 'learn' how to learn and come to understand how they 'fit the bigger picture'. This helps the individual come to 'see' the purpose of their efforts and contributions in achieving business objectives.

Part of this is first developing self awareness in relation to impact and influence of self on others, and others on self. This is a key to having purpose and meaning for doing something which is essential for developing motivation to take action, gain commitment and get others to to take responsibility.  It is also essential to achieving positive discretionary behaviour and building a mutual psychological contract at work.

Learning through reflection

A good coach, manager or leader will understand that coaching is a process.

Learning through reflection has many benefits. You will also be able to monitor your development and evaluate your own progress.
