Melanie Powell - Training and human resource devlopment for older workers in the financial sector
Melanie and Linda are developing an empirical study in the UK financial sector to examine the relationship between age, trust, training and human resource development and to analyse how best to work with age diversity and tackling stereotypes.

In 2008, the financial crisis brought the world's finacial sectors to the edge of disaster. According to the 2009 Edelman Trust Barometer, consumer trust in the financial sector was cut by half in both the US and in Europe. This sector is now subject to tighter regulation and will need to alter employee practice through training and human resource development to rebuild trust both within and outside the sector.
However, the UK financial sector is dominated by older workers, and previous research suggests that older workers are disadvantaged in respect of training at work and that stereotype views and intergenerational conflict can affect the outcome of training. (Villosio et al. 2008).
Melanie and Linda are developing an empirical study in the UK financial sector to examine the relationship between age, trust, training and human resource development and to analyse how best to work with age diversity and tackling stereotypes. The results will be used to improve training for older workers in the current financial climate and disseminated at the annual International Conference on Human Resource Development Research and Practice.
