Matt Bellamy graduated in 2009 with a BA (Hons) Business Management.
What are you doing now that you've graduated?
I'm a business manager for Barclays Bank, responsible for three branches. I'm managing people and also generating new business, whilst managing relationships between businesses and the bank.
I was headhunted for the job as someone I worked with at another company came to Barclays and recommended me to them.
Going on a work placement really helped me
I wouldn't have been approached without having the previous experience that I gained on placement or without the academic background. The development of my people and communication skills enabled me to present myself well, and provide Barclays with some real life experiences which were supported by my academic background. It gave me the ability to manage different people and get the best from the people I work with.
I've been able to put what I learned into practice
As part of my Business Management degree I studied the Financial Statement Analysis module. I'm now using the skills I learned on this as I have to study company documents in relation to opening accounts and lending money.
Through doing my placement with Enterprise I was also able to put the theory of what I'd learned in my degree into practice, and to understand how it affected real business situations. Then, when studying for my final year I could apply these experiences to case studies and theories.
Looking to the future
I'd like to work within the bank and establish myself within the role for 12 months and then assess how my career is progressing. I'll look at the possible opportunities open to me and my end goal is corporate level management.
