About the course

Marketing is constantly evolving and changing. This degree will equip you with a deep understanding of the fundamentals of marketing so that you have the knowledge to adapt to and embrace ongoing change. Digital marketing is now vitally important to any business or organisation, and all marketing activity has to be measured and justified. It's no longer enough to be creative, you need to show what you are getting for your money and be able to change a campaign at a moments notice if it's not delivering. Understanding the customer and developing a relationship with the customer is key.

The BA (Hons) Marketing and Brand Management degree will equip you with all of the knowledge and tools to excel in the modern marketing environment. The first stage is shared across all marketing degrees. You'll learn the business disciplines of finance, economics, data analysis and human resource management and how these relate to marketing, such as customer data analysis - so you can identify trends and analyse customer feedback. You'll also be introduced to the fundamentals of marketing and you'll start to understand how marketing functions in a real business with other departments and customers. Being able to combine elements of different business disciplines is vital in business, and key to your development as a successful manager.

Throughout the degree you'll integrate everything you're learning and apply it in business scenarios. You could be setting up a new business or trying to improve market share of a current one. Success or failure is in your hands.

You'll start to specialise in marketing areas in the second stage. Customer communication, understanding and developing the brand, and understanding the importance of emerging technologies in marketing such as SEO and social networking are just some of the areas you'll look at.

At the third stage you can choose to take an optional placement year, or continue straight to the final stage. Our students often say that their placement year is the most rewarding part of the course. You can work alongside professionals in your chosen area and see first hand how the knowledge and skills you've learnt are put into practice. Our Placements Officer will help you find a position and support you throughout the placement period. The final stage focuses more on strategy. You'll learn about areas such as sustainable marketing and services marketing. You'll also choose two options from a range of subjects from consumer behaviour to reputation management.

You will apply all of your learning in the Independent Study. This is an in-depth study of a marketing discipline within an organisational or sector context.

Throughout the degree we'll also look at developing your workplace skills. Many employers complain that graduates have academic knowledge but aren't ready for work. At Derby we take this seriously. You'll learn how to work effectively in a team, to prepare and deliver presentations, to write reports, to understand a budget. You'll also learn essential marketing skills such as how to write effective copy and how to proof read.
