Maria Iliffe - MA Leadership Coaching
Maria has just completed her first year of the MA Leadership Coaching course - the Postgraduate Certificate in Business Coaching. She's now moving on to the Postgraduate Diploma level. As well as studying part time, Maria is also a self employed executive coach.
Relevant to my work
The MA in Leadership Coaching has been really interesting and is completely relevant to what I do on a day to day basis in my work. The course is very practical and is as much about putting the learning into practice and understanding it as it is about learning the theory. I have learnt about a wide range of tools and techniques that I have been able to put immediately in to practice.
One of the things that I really like is the fact that a lot of the learning can be self directed. Balancing part time study and work, whilst challenging, can be managed, especially as I find the subject matter so interesting, and it is having such a positive impact on my effectiveness at work.
I have implemented a great proportion of my learning back in the workplace - the course is highly practical and everything that you learn is relevant and can be used when coaching others. It has really broadened the tools and techniques that I use for my work. I knew that I would be a good coach, but with the knowledge gained from this course I am an excellent coach - or so my clients tell me!
A great learning environment
I have found the lecturers to be very supportive. They operate in a very relaxed and friendly way, whilst ensuring that the learning is interesting and enjoyable. They also make themselves available outside of the classroom on a regular basis.
I have made a number of very good friends, who I'm sure will now be friends for life. In fact, some of them may well become business partners.
I would highly recommend the programme and in particular studying at the University of Derby. The learning experience is really effective and uses the most up to date thinking about how people learn best.
