Financial help 12/13
If you started your undergraduate course before September 2012, here's what help you can get towards the costs
Not from England or studying part time?
Fees and financial help are different for:
Up to £1,200 extra at Derby University
Most of our undergraduate students get an extra amount of money every year, on top of the usual loans and grants you can get whichever university you go to. This is called a bursary and unlike loans, it doesn't need to be repaid.

Loans
You may be able to take out a tuition fee loan, for the full cost of your fees (eg £3,465) which you don't need to pay back until you graduate, or leave the University and are earning over £15,000 a year.
You can also apply for a loan to help cover living costs. Both are from the Student Loans Company and are combined into a single debt when you leave.
Your loans will get paid in three instalments each year - one at the start of each term.
How much loan will I get?
In 2012/13, you can get a loan to pay for all of your tuition fees: £3,465.
In 2012/13 the maximum loan for living costs is:
- £4,950 if you're living away from home
- £3,838 if you're living at your parents'/guardians' home
72% of this loan is given to anyone who qualifies, but how much of the remaining 28% you get depends on your household income.

Maintenance grant
You can also apply to Student Finance England for a maintenance grant of up to £2,984.
Grants don't have to be paid back but what you receive depends on your household income.
Grants are available for full time undergraduate, foundation and HND students, except those who receive extra funding, ie NHS bursaries.
Please note that if you receive a maintenance grant, your student loan for living costs willbe reduced.
